Australian banks demand ban on credit card betting
Banks in Australia are pushing for a ban on using credit cards for online betting to protect customers from debt
Australian banks are calling on the government to introduce legislation to ban the use of credit cards for online gambling.
Anna Bligh, CEO of the Australian Banking Association (ABA), has requested the ban to protect members' interests rather than to shut down the industry.
However, some Australian banks have already prohibited customers from using credit cards for online gambling.
A major challenge with implementing a blanket ban is the difficulty in differentiating between online gambling and charity lotteries, which use the same transaction code.
Independent MP Rebekha Sharkie plans to bring a private member’s bill to parliament this week on gambling regulation.
