Gambling industry divided over match-day jersey sponsorship ban in Australia
The gambling industry in Australia is split over whether to ban or restrict match-day jersey sponsorship following the move by some of the world's biggest sports clubs
The gambling industry in Australia is divided over whether to ban or heavily restrict sponsorship of match-day jerseys after some of the world's largest sports clubs phased out such sponsorship deals.
While some companies support a total ban, others are resistant, saying the entire industry is being punished due to ads from rivals. Wagering giants, the federal government, and the NRL are examining the merits of the English Premier League's deal with all clubs to phase out sponsorships on the front of match-day shirts by the end of the 2025-26 season.
The Australian public's concerns about gambling promotion are shared by sports fans worldwide, according to the committee's chair, Labor MP Peta Murphy.
