Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Information has announced a collaboration with telecommunications providers to block access to gambling content, in an attempt to clamp down on both land-based and online gambling, which is illegal under Indonesian law.
The government aims to curtail the activities of illegal providers, who have been using tactics such as influencer promotion and direct messaging through platforms like SMS and WhatsApp.
To date, the ministry has blocked over 5,000 gambling sites and 846,047 pieces of gambling content between 2018 and 2023.
