International Betting Integrity Association expands focus on Brazilian market amid impending regulation
The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) is increasing its operations in Brazil in response to upcoming government regulation, aiming to combat match-fixing
The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) is increasing its focus on the Brazilian market due to impending government regulation. The organization has expanded its operations in Brazil following the release of its Q1 integrity report. In that period, the IBIA reported 40 sports betting alerts to relevant authorities, covering nine sports such as football, tennis, table tennis, cricket, basketball, esports, volleyball, boxing, and snooker.
While the IBIA's monitoring network already covers 60% of the Brazilian market, the organization has highlighted the presence of 105 suspicious alerts in Latin America between 2018 and 2022, with Brazil accounting for 31% of them. Specifically, there were 33 alerts related to suspicious events in Brazil during that period. The IBIA employs a monitoring and alert platform that utilizes detailed consumer data to detect and report any potentially corrupt betting activity.
The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, has approved the creation of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry focused on investigating potential match-fixing cases related to sports betting. In anticipation of the government's forthcoming provisional measure on sports betting regulation, Khalid Ali, the CEO of IBIA, expressed support for the decision to regulate the industry, emphasizing that balanced and efficient regulation is crucial in combatting match-fixing. The IBIA aims to collaborate with policymakers to ensure Brazil benefits from a competitive sports betting market while minimizing the risks associated with match-fixing.
