Portuguese Gaming Expert Applauds APAJO's Efforts Against Copyright Infringement Ads
APAJO's pledge to reduce gambling ads on copyright infringing sites is praised for promoting responsible practices in the Portuguese gaming market.
Portuguese online gambling and sports betting operators association APAJO has committed to reducing advertising on sites that infringe copyright, a move that has been welcomed by industry experts. Filipe Mayer, Partner at CCA Law and an expert in Portuguese gambling law, explained that gambling operators who advertise infringing copyright face potential legal risks, including the risk of having to pay compensations and not being able to obtain a license to operate in Portugal.
According to Mayer, respecting intellectual property is already enforced by law, but reinforcing compliance with these rules through self-regulation is a clear sign of maturity and responsibility in the Portuguese gaming market. He also emphasized that it is crucial for gambling operators to balance the need for effective advertising with the responsibility to promote good advertising and communication practices, as emphasized by APAJO. Systematic non-compliance with advertising rules by operators may result in a complete ban on advertising for gambling and betting, which would benefit illegal operators and harm licensed operators trying to make themselves known to the market.
It is important to note that APAJO does not represent the whole industry and its rules are self-regulation rules, valid only to its members. Nevertheless, the move is a clear indication of the industry's willingness to promote responsible advertising practices and respect intellectual property rights.
