The proposed gambling ad ban in Ireland's Gambling Regulation Bill 2022, which covers TV, radio, and all electronic communication platforms, has advanced in the Oireachtas despite opposition
The proposed ban on gambling ads, part of Ireland's Gambling Regulation Bill 2022, has passed the first stage of amendments in the Oireachtas, despite opposition from industry bodies and broadcasters.
The bill includes a comprehensive ban on gambling advertising from 5.30am to 9pm on radio and television, and across all electronic communication platforms.
Penalties for violation could include fines or up to five years' imprisonment.
The amended bill also proposes changes to the Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act 1996 to prevent under-18s from working in gambling activities, and sets up a new regulatory body, the Gambling Regulatory Authority.
The ban on free bets is another notable reform included in the bill.
