South Korea forms taskforce to crack down on gambling at hold'em pubs
A new taskforce backed by the South Korean government is set to crack down on illegal gambling activities at the nation's 'hold'em pubs', which are poker-themed bars
South Korea's government-backed "Hold'em Pub" Illegal Response Task Force is planning a major crackdown on gambling at 'hold'em pubs', popular poker-themed bars in the country.
During its inaugural meeting in Seoul, the task force revealed plans for a nationwide investigation, increased penalties for operators, and rewards for informants.
The task force, which consists of representatives from several government ministries and the National Police Agency, also aims to provide guidance to businesses through local governments and associations.
The task force was formed in response to the rise in popularity of such venues, which have been widely accused of facilitating illegal gambling and money laundering.
