UK MP highlights gambling's support for rural communities in UK white paper
Caroline Nokes, MP for Romsey and Southampton North, has emphasised the importance of the UK's gambling industry supporting rural communities
Conservative MP Caroline Nokes has highlighted the importance of the gambling industry’s support for rural communities, particularly the horse racing sector, as part of the UK government’s gambling white paper.
Nokes stated that reforms to the 2005 Gambling Act must balance the protection of vulnerable individuals and the gambling industry’s sustainability with the need to maintain its support for rural sectors.
In particular, she argued that horseracing relies on the support and funding from the betting industry, which itself generates £7.1bn for the economy and supports 110,000 jobs.
Nokes stressed that the white paper must strike the right balance in order to protect both vulnerable individuals and the vast majority who gamble safely.
